Sony HT-4800DP Home Theater System Review

The Sony HT-4800DP brings together everything you need to turn your living room into your own personal cinema in one affordable package.

Pumping 600 watts of total power--100 watts into 5 channels plus a 100-watt subwoofer--this system includes a receiver, 5-disc DVD/CD changer, and 6 speakers. For surround sound, it offers Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II decoding. All components have a silver sheen to match Sony's WEGA TV models. The 5-disc DVD player is compatible with CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW (in the video mode), and MP3 formats. It has 1 component and 1 S-video output, and 1 coaxial and 1 analog audio output.

The receiver has a digitally tuned AM/FM radio with 20 FM and 10 AM presets. It offers connections for CD, MD/tape, DVD, Video1, Video2, and subwoofer as well as a Monitor connection. You can connect DVD audio via the optical or coaxial digital connections. It has a 1/4-inch headphone jack.

Tech Talk

Dolby Digital: This sound format for movie theaters is more advanced than Dolby Pro Logic Surround. In this format, the rear speakers output stereo sound with an expanded frequency range, and a subwoofer channel for deep bass is independently provided.

This format is also called "5.1" because the subwoofer channel is counted as 0.1 channel (since it functions only when a deep bass effect is needed). All six channels in this format are recorded individually to realize superior channel separation. Furthermore, since all the signals are processed digitally, less signal degradation occurs.

What's in the Box?

STR-K4800P receiver, DVP-NC675P DVD player, 2 front speakers (SS-MSP760), 2 surround speakers (SS-MSP760S), 1 center speaker (SS-CNP760), 1 subwoofer (SS0WMSP76), remote control (RM-PP760), video cable, AM loop antenna, FM lead antenna, footpads for speakers, and short and long speaker cords.
