Pioneer PDP-5060HD Plasma TV Review

It doesn't have to be Halloween for you to have a monster in your house. With the Pioneer PDP-5060HD plasma television you can have one all year round. It has a massive 50" display that really makes the 42" models look downright puny by comparison.
That huge display makes this set ideal for the home theater. You can watch movies in 16:9 aspect ratio for true motion picture reproduction and the 160 degree viewing angle allows comfortable viewing from almost anywhere in the room without distortion or color washout.
Out of the box the Pioneer PDP-5060HD is ready to go thanks to its built-in ATSC and Dual NTSC TV tuners. Digital video comes by way of a CableCARD interface and a subscription to a digital cable service.
Where this TV shines is in its picture quality, which is above and beyond what most other HD televisions can produce. To get images that good the PDP-5060HD uses Advanced Continuous Emission, which allows the TV to reproduce billions of colors. In addition, the ACE IV improves grayscale rendering when the picture becomes dark,
In order to get the colors to be as vibrant as they are Pioneer uses a Deep Encased Cell Structure design. This setup allows each pixel to put out a stronger, more concentrated beam of light. This ensures that colors are truer and the images are brighter than other displays on the market. In addition, the Pioneer PDP-5060HD incorporates a Pure Crystal Emissive Layer. This layer allows the TV to deliver dynamic color and contrast as well as extremely black blacks instead of murky grays.
Pioneer is one of the only companies to use a Surface Pure Color Filter in their HD plasma displays. This filter is a non-glass piece that is bonded directly to the Pioneer PDP-5060HD's plasma panel to cut down on the amount of light that is reflected and refracted. This helps to keep the picture bright and crisp in different lighting conditions.
Adding to the incredible color and brightness is the TV's native resolution, which tops out at 1280X768. The contrast ratio for the Pioneer PDP-5060HD is a very acceptable 4000-1 while the brightness is a very high 1100 cd/m2.
Another innovative feature is the Separate Media Receiver. This allows the user to attach almost any component to the receiver and connect them to the TV with only one cable. Not only does this make connections to the set more convenient, but also helps to reduce clutter.
The list of impressive features included with the Pioneer PDP-5060HD goes on. Picture in picture display, TV Guide On Screen Interactive Program Guide and V-Chip Parental Control add to an already outstanding setup.
Pretty pictures in a home theater setup are only half the equation and the Pioneer PDP-5060HD manages to deliver above average sound too. The set has 2 built-in speakers at 13 watts each and manage to emulate surround sound.
In addition to all the above niceties the Pioneer PDP-5060HD comes standard with these connection options:
* 2 Antenna F Connections
* 2 HDMI with HDCP
* 3 Component (1 front)
* 3 AV
* Composite (1 front)
* 3 S-Video (1 front)
* 2 i link (for use with DVHS)
* 1 D-Sub (front for PC)
* 1 SR CableCard interface (rear)
* 1 Optical Audio
* 1 Subwoofer
* 1 Composite monitor
* 1 SR+
But there is one downside to this spectacular TV and it's a problem that plagues many plasma displays - screen burn. Screen burn occurs when a static image remains on the screen too long causing a 'ghost' of itself to become burned into the screen. Some HD plasma TVs are equipped to reduce the likelihood of this happening, but the Pioneer PDP-5060HD isn't, so users will have to be cautious especially when playing video games.
Conclusion
When it comes to high definition plasma TVs this set really stands alone when it comes to picture quality. Watching a movie on the massive 50” screen really gives you the feeling of being in a theater. And while the sound is certainly acceptable, try hooking in a true 5:1 surround sound system to be truly blown away. The media unit is a great inclusion and really saves time when hooking up other components. As stated, the screen burn is an issue and requires that viewers be mindful of what they choose to view on the TV. All in all, the Pioneer PDP-5060HD offers a lot for the money.
