Pioneer PDP-42A3HD Plasma TV Review

If you haven't yet made the leap to high-definition television then the Pioneer PDP-42A3HD is worth a look as an entry-level system. This set offers rock solid picture quality and a size that won't you won't have to shoehorn into your living room.

High definition programming can be seen right out of the box with the built-in ATSC digital tuner that's able to pick up HD signals over the air. Or you can plug into a HDMI ready cable or satellite set-top box for the best quality in high-definition picture as well as sound. Not only does HDMI support standard, enhanced or high definition video, but also multi-channel digital audio on a single cable connection.

Pixel Perfect

When you buy an HD set you do so for the picture and the Pioneer PDP-42A3HD delivers in spades. The front of the TV is an optical-grade glass panel that filters colors and equalizes the light spectrum emitted by the plasma. This produces a much more accurate range of colors and better contrast.

In addition to the special color filter, Pioneer employs their exclusive Crystal Emissive Layer, which is set between the plasma glass and the individual cells. This layer conducts the energy in a more efficient manner by allowing the cells to charge and discharge three times faster than before.

If that weren't enough, the Pioneer PDP-42A3HD uses Advanced Continuous Emission IV or ACE IV that works alongside the CEL to reduce the visual steps between colors. This helps to make the transition from one color to another smoother than was possible in previous sets. Horizontal and vertical ribs help to control the bleeding of color from one cell to another. All of this makes for a brighter, sharper image that's filled with accurate color.

The display of the Pioneer PDP-42A3HD has an impressive 1024 X 768 pixel resolution and a 160-degree viewing angle, which makes it ideal for a home theater setup. Like other Pioneer plasma sets this one uses Pure Drive II, which is 10-bit all digital processing that helps to maintain a digital path through the processing of the signal. Pure Drive delivers a picture with practically no video noise or loss of image quality.

Other features included with the Pioneer PDP-42A3HD are: picture-in-picture capability, color temperature control, AV memory selection presets (standard, dynamic, movie, game, and user configurable), and aspect ratio control.

Sounds About Right

While picture quality is the main reason people buy high-def plasma television sound quality is always a close second. The Pioneer PDP-42A3HD's speakers produce 10 watts of power per channel for a total of 20 watts. This won't shake the house down, but is more than enough to fill an average room thanks to Pioneer's SRS TruSurround XT technology, which simulates 3D surround sound from just two speakers.

Pioneer didn't stop with the SRU TruSurround and included in the audio mix TruBass technology. TruBass helps to create rich, deep bass without the use of a subwoofer. The bass tones produced are far beyond the physical low frequency that are able to be produced by the speakers.

Connection options are a necessity with all of today's digital gadgets and the Pioneer PDP-42A3HD comes equipped with the following: * Composite AV (RCA): 3 in, 1 out * S-Video: 3 in * Component Video: 2 in

* HDMI: 1 in * RF: 2 in

* S/PDIF digital audio: 1 in

Conclusion

While there are televisions on the market that slightly edge out the Pioneer PDP-42A3HD when it comes to picture quality, they generally don't offer all of the input and output options that the Pioneer does. The set's 42" display isn't the largest you can buy, but it will sit comfortably in smaller rooms or apartments.

The real selling point, though, is the features to price ratio and there are few companies that include as many features for your dollars as does Pioneer. Either propped up with the included tabletop stand or wall mounted with some extra hardware, this unit will shine in just about any home.
