Philips 50PF7320A Plasma TV Review

High-definition television will be the new standard in the coming years and the Philips 50PF7320A is worth looking at if you haven't already made the jump to a high-def set. It features a crystal clear 50-inch widescreen plasma display that's perfectly suited to a home theater setup or video game setup.

Right out of the box this set is capable of or high-definition viewing thanks to a removable CableCARD. This optional card picks up HD broadcasts from your digital cable service provided you already have a subscription to digital cable. In addition, the Philips 50PF7320A has a built in 181 channel NTSC tuner that allows users to view standard television broadcasts.

The TV can either be placed on any flat surface with the included tabletop stand and can also be wall mounted with an optional (not included) VESA compatible kit. Screen burn can be a problem with plasma displays, but the Philips 50PF7320A uses an anti-aging circuit and a special anti-reflective coating on the screen to help better protect your investment.

When people make the switch to high-def, they expect exceptional picture quality and this TV delivers thanks to Phillips' exclusive Pixel Plus video processor, which bumps up the number of lines and pixels displayed to put out amazing detail and razor sharp images. Added to that, this unit has a 1366X768 pixel resolution and a 160-degree viewing angle which makes it ideal for a home theater. Contrast ratio is set at 10000:1, which simply means that the higher the ratio, the subtler the color details can be displayed.

Picture is also greatly enhanced by the inclusion of a 3D comb filter. This filer separates brightness and color signals better in the 3D space and helps to eliminate cross color, cross luminescence as well as dot crawl distortion. And if that wasn't enough, the Philips 50PF7320A performs field by field comparisons of the TV picture so that it can accurately separate the color from the black and white information to remove horizontal as well as vertical hanging dots. This ensures that the picture is crisp and full of detail.

The unit also features a picture in picture display that allows simultaneous viewing of 2 programs, an auto volume leveler that helps balance the volume between soft and loud parts of a show or movie, a sleep timer and V-Chip controls so you can monitor your children's viewing.

If you watch progressive-scan movies the Philips 50PF7320A can perform a 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal which allows viewers to watch progressive-scan video in its native 24 frame per second format as opposed to standard 30 FPS.

Another standout feature is Phillips' Active Control function, which helps to optimize picture quality by analyzing the incoming picture signal and comparing it to the room's light condition. This allows the Philips 50PF7320A to make adjustments to the picture settings so that the image never becomes too washed out or too dark.

While some TV manufactures might make sound an afterthought, Phillips added two built-in stereo speakers that put out 15 watts per channel for a total of 30 watts of power. Also, the unit emulates 5.1 channel surround sound from the two speakers thanks to the Dolby Digital surround sound circuitry.

The Philips 50PF7320A also comes standard with these ports:

* Composite AV (RCA) In: 3 (1 side)

* S-Video In: 3 (1 side)

* Component Video In (Y PB PR): 2

* HDMI In: 2

* RF In: 1

* PC Audio In: 1

* PC Audio Out: 1

* Monitor Out: 1

* USB: 1

* Headphone: 1

The USB port in the Philips 50PF7320A is especially useful in allowing users to access their JPEG, MP3, MP3-PRO and ALB slideshow files off of virtually any USB memory drive and digital cameras. It's as simple as plugging in the device to the USB port and viewing your files right on the screen.

Conclusion

There really isn't much fault to be found with the Philips 50PF7320A flat panel plasma TV. The picture quality is definitely drool-worthy as are all of the standard features that come with the set. The only scary thing might be the price. At just south of three thousand, it's definitely not for the budget minded. But then, you really do get what you pay for.
