Technically, the Panasonic DMR-ES10K rivals its higher-priced pals. The 2x LP horizontal resolution recording captures 500 lines of resolution-in quality terms, the resolution is superb, even in LP mode.

The interface stands out too. Come home mid-stream? Chasing Playback lets you start to watch a program already in progress while you continue recording it. Other smart features include Time Slip, which lets you record the current episode while you watch last week's episode.
